DIVINE HORSEMEN - THE LIVING GODS OF HAITI REGIÓN: 0 - - IDIOMA: INGLÉS - - SUBTÍTULOS: SIN SUBTÍTULOS- - P.V.P: 26,95 € A journey into the fascinating world of the Voudoun religion of Haiti filmed by Maya Deren during 1947-1951, and edited posthumously by Teji and Cherel Ito. The viewer attends the rituals of Rada, Petro and Congo cults, whose devotees commune with the cosmic powers through invocations - ritual offerings, song and dance. The Voudoun pantheon of deities, or Ioa are introduced as living gods, actually taking possession of their devotees. Also featured are the Rara and Mardi Gras celebrations. Although best known as a pioneer of independent experimental cinema, Maya Deren was also a Voundoun initiate, and hence able to take her camera and recorder where few have gone before or since. The soundtrack conveys the stirring, invocatory power of the ritual drumming and singing. Maya went first to Haiti as an artist, thining to make a film in which Haitian dance should be a leading theme. But the manifestation of rapture that first fascinated and then seized her transported her beyond the bounds of any art she had ever known. She was open to the messages of that speechless deep, which is, indeed, the wellspring of the mysteries.
THE CAMERAMAN'S REVENGE & OTHER FANTASTIC TALES REGIÓN: 0 - - IDIOMA: INGLÉS - - SUBTÍTULOS: SIN SUBTÍTULOS- - P.V.P: 21,95 € The legendary Ladislaw Starewicz created some of the most imaginative and loveliest works of puppet animation ever filmed. While working in Russia, he directed his first classic "The Cameraman's Revenge" (1912), a story of love and infidelity among the insects, and the recently rediscovered "The Insects' Christmas" (1913), a dazzlingly beautiful film of the yuletide celebrations of a Christmas-tree ornament and his tiny friends. After relocating to Paris, Starewicz made the political allegory "Frogland" (1922), the gorgeous hand-colored fable "Voice of the Nightingale" (1923), the irresistible "The Mascot" (1933) and the snowland fantasy "Winter Carousel" (1958). Starewicz's grasshoppers, dogs, frogs, dolls and other creatures portray heroics and follies with an exuberance of humor and invention. A delight for viewers both young and old!
Imprescindible!!
THE HUBLEY COLLECTION 2 REGIÓN: 1 - - IDIOMA: INGLÉS - - SUBTÍTULOS: SIN SUBTÍTULOS- - P.V.P: 26,95 € The second volume in this three-disc set exploration of the work of the Hubley Studio showcases the films of two generations of animators. Based on a book by former Chicago University president Robert Maynard Hutchins (who also serves as the film's narrator), the relatively little known "Zuckerandl!" (1968) satirizes the pomposity of academic presentations. The imaginary philosopher Alexander Zuckerandl propounds the theory that the aim of all life is to get through it without sensation and therefore without pain. Words and images combine to satirize the folly of a life not only unexamined but unlived. "Cockaboody" (1973) offers some charming animation of the stylized figures of two little sisters as they play and argue through their bedroom and bathroom. When the younger sister throws a temper tantrum, it appears as a cloudy, threatening monster. In "Hello" (1984), three semi-abstract extraterrestrial musicians embark on a mission to Earth, sending bubbles containing messages of peace to the planet's inhabitants. "Her Grandmother's Gift" (1995) examines the changing ways in which women present information to their daughters about their bodies and the emotional resonance found in an increased honesty. Volume 2 includes Seers and Clowns (1994), Sky Dance (1979), Cockaboody (1973), Hello (1984), Step by Step (1978), Rainbows of Hawai'i (1995), The Big Bang and Other Creation Myths (1981), Zuckerkandl (1968), Whither Weather (1977), Her Grandmother's Gift (1995).
MIDSOMER MURDERS REGIÓN: 1 - - IDIOMA: INGLÉS - - SUBTÍTULOS: SIN SUBTÍTULOS- - P.V.P: 19,95 € Fans of Caroline Graham's young-but-game Sergeant Troy are in for a double treat with this entry in the Midsomer Murders series. At the behest of Detective Chief Inspector Barnaby's actress-daughter Cully, the two policemen spend this episode trailed by a Troy Doppelganger researching a part. And we're not even to the mystery yet, which is a surprisingly and enjoyably old-fashioned one: A ho-hum case of vandalism in a local museum leads to rumors of a haunting and a very real murder. Beyond the Grave has a much less weighty feel than some of the other episodes in this series, but there is much to recommend it, including the exasperated but loyal relationship between Troy and Barnaby and a deft performance by Prunella Scales as a village psychic.

CHRONICALLY UNFEASIBLE REGIÓN: 1 - - IDIOMA: PORTUGUÉS - - SUBTÍTULOS: INGLÉS- - P.V.P: 15,95 € Set in exotic Brazil, director Sérgio Bianchi’s bitterly sarcastic political comedy skewers race and class relations with witty precision as it presents a society in chaos. Filmed in an original style using both fiction and quasi-documentary styles, the story revolves around six characters in and around a restaurant in São Paulo. This disparate group serves as a microcosm of modern Brazil, a people besieged by corruption, exploitation, sexual oppression and social discord. How these characters interact and struggle for identity is at the core of a controversial, original and unsettling look at the class struggle that is as funny as it is intelligent. Not since Luis Bunuel’s The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie has a film balanced biting social critique, a kaleidoscope of memorable characters, and humor tinged with the realities and hypocrisies of everyday life. GUN-SHY REGIÓN: 1 - - IDIOMA: ALEMÁN - - SUBTÍTULOS: INGLÉS- - P.V.P: 26,95 € A major hit on the European film festival circuit, Dito Tsintsadze’s “poetic thriller” will keep you on edge from the startling beginning to the jaw-dropping final shot. A young man sits alone on a bus. A beautiful young woman drops a note in his lap as she walks by. It says simply, “Help me.” But what help could she, a self-assured martial arts student, ever need? And how could he, a gentle pacifist who delivers meals to the elderly, ever help her? Yet as our hero follows after her, his bizarre journey begins. Does he become a rescuing knight falling in love? Or a psychotic killer descending into madness? And is there even a difference? Spare, lean, and laced with humor, Gun-Shy (or more accurately, “Fear of Shooting”) is truly “a film of terrible beauty” (Toronto International Film Festival). THE FILMS OF JAMES BROUGHTON REGIÓN: 1 - - IDIOMA: INGLÉS - - SUBTÍTULOS: SIN SUBTÍTULOS- - P.V.P: 55 € For the first time on DVD, the best films of avant-garde pioneer James Broughton have been assembled for this magnificent three-disc set. A poet, author, and filmmaker, Broughton, who was christened the "great and wise master of the American avant-garde" by critic Amos Vogel, attempted to use cinema as kind of poetic statement. He took as his subject matter love, sex, the human body, and dream imagery, rendered with a playful, whimsical, and sometimes erotic touch. Featuring such seminal titles as MOTHER’S DAY (1948), DREAMWOOD (1972), and TESTAMENT(1974), this three-disc set organizes 17 of Broughton’s films into three distinct eras to capture the breadth and evolution of his themes and subject matter. Disc 1: THE EARLY YEARS Disc 1: THE EARLY YEARSBroughton’s first films focused on the themes of romantic love and human behavior. A highlight in this collection includes THE PLEASURE GARDEN, which was named Best Fantastic-Poetic Film at the Cannes Film Festival. This group of black and white shorts include: MOTHER’S DAY(1948), LOONY TOM (1951), FOUR IN THE AFTERNOON (1951), and THE PLEASURE GARDEN (1953). Disc 2: A MIDDLE PERIOD During the 1960s and 1970s, Broughton’s imagery became more erotic while his subject matter explored the landscape of dream and the mysteries of Zen poetry. A highlight in this collection is TESTAMENT, a self-portrait that depicts Broughton’s life as a pageant of personal imagery. This group of color films include: THE BED (1968), THE GOLDEN POSITIONS(1970), This Is It (1971), DREAMWOOD (1972), HIGH KUKUS (1973), TESTAMENT (1974), THE WATER CIRCLE (1975), and EROGENY.Disc 3: FINALE: THE FILMS WITH JOEL SINGER In the last era of his life and career, Broughton teamed with partner Joel Singer to produce a series of films on the nature of intimacy and personal relationships. Films include: SONGS OF THE GODBOY (1977), HERMES BIRD (1979), THE GARDENER OF EDEN (1981), DEVOTIONS (1983), and SCATTERED REMAINS (1988), a portrait of Broughton by Singer in which the artist acts out his poetry. LOOK TO THE SKY REGIÓN: 1 - - IDIOMA: INGLÉS - - SUBTÍTULOS: INGLÉS- - P.V.P: 26,95 € Based loosely on the book Childhood by Jona Oberski, LOOK TO THE SKY depicts a hope-filled view of the Holocaust from the perspective of a young Dutch boy, Jonah. His story begins when German soldiers, speaking a language unknown to four-year-old Jonah, seize the boy along with his parents from their home in Amsterdam and escort them to a village in the Dutch countryside, and then to a transit camp. Oblivious to the portentous events unfolding around him, the youngster clings to his parents' love and his memories of the past. This enables him not only to face the sufferings that will soon be inflicted upon him, but also, to observe with a certain equanimity, even humor, the details of his strange, new life. Jonah sees -- and remembers -- everything very clearly. And not only the hardships and the horrors, but also the acts of kindness and moments of poetry, for example, his parents, forced to conclude their last act of love in the same room as their son... the camp cook, who drops him headfirst into a pot... and the elderly couple who almost despair of saving him, but finally see a way. What Jonah sees and recalls most clearly, however, is his own struggle to survive -- his efforts to emerge alive from the belly of the beast that has swallowed him and the whole world. And despite everything, Jonah does survive -- battered, but not broken. NORMAN MCLAREN: THE MASTERS EDITION REGIÓN: 0 - - IDIOMA: INGLÉS - - SUBTÍTULOS: SIN SUBTÍTULOS- - P.V.P: 99 € Influenced by surrealism and his passion for music and dance, controversial abstract filmmaker Norman McLaren is heralded as a ground-breaking visionary. From his early cinematic experiments in Scotland in 1933 to his final film for the National Film Board of Canada in 1983, McLaren's work is remarkable for its inventiveness, research and humanism. This carefully restored collection of 58 of his films includes the Oscar-winning "Neighbors" (1952) and several unfinished and formerly lost efforts. This seven-DVD set of his complete works also provides an illuminating booklet insert, filmed interviews with McLaren himself and 14 new short documentaries that guide the viewer to the heart of McLaren's art, each offering a distinct perspective of his work. THE LAST GREAT WILDERNESS REGIÓN: 1 - - IDIOMA: INGLÉS - - SUBTÍTULOS: SIN SUBTÍTULOS- - P.V.P: 15,95 € A sly, unpredictable thriller about two men seeking refuge at a strange inn, The Last Great Wilderness is a weird hybrid of Rosemarys Baby and The Wicker Man. After their car runs out of gas, two men, in the middle of nowhere, seek refuge at an isolated country house. Although greeted warmly, the inhabitants of the house are an odd assortment of folks who appear to be hiding a dark secret. Are they harmless eccentrics, or possibly menacing cult members? The Last Great Wilderness is a bizarre and enjoyable mix of mystery, horror and the occult. AND THE BAND PLAYED ON REGIÓN: 1 - - IDIOMA: INGLÉS - - SUBTÍTULOS: SIN SUBTÍTULOS- - P.V.P: 14,95 € A superior, made-for-cable film, this Home Box Office adaptation of Randy Shilts's chronicle detailing the emergence of AIDS in America and the fight against bureaucracy and society for a cure is a taut, outrageous, and affecting true-life drama. Matthew Modine (Birdy, Married to the Mob) is featured as a doctor with the Centers for Disease Control at the time when the first reports of a disease plaguing the gay community were heard. Modine and his colleagues embark on an investigation that resembles a compelling detective story as they try to track the source of the disease and discover a cure. Their efforts are thwarted by an ambivalent government and a turf war between French physicians and a celebrated American researcher (Alan Alda) who seems to place his own glory above the dead and the dying. Featuring heartfelt performances from a stellar cast including Richard Gere, Glenne Headly, Anjelica Huston, Steve Martin, Ian McKellen, Saul Rubinek, and Lily Tomlin, this impassioned film stands as an impressive and important document of one of the darkest eras in modern human history, and a tribute to the spirit of those who sought to save lives. |
EDISON: THE INVENTION OF THE MOVIES (1891 -1918) REGIÓN: 1 - - IDIOMA: MUDAS - - P.V.P: 90 € Edison - The Invention of the Movies is a four-disc treasure trove of 140 of the first moving pictures ever seen, spanning the birth of cinema from 1891-1918. The collaboration between Kino Video and the Museum of Modern Art includes 14-second-long camera tests, early special effects, street scenes, humorous shorts, and "The Great Train Robbery," widely considered the world's first blockbuster. Arranged chronologically, the films gradually improve in technical sophistication and narrative complexity while providing riveting glimpses of American culture 100 years ago. Highlights include the slyly edited "The Gay Shoe Clerk," the phantasmagoric "Dreams of the Rarebit Fiend," and a film of social justice called "The Kleptomaniac." Contemporary sensibilities will be challenged by persistent racial stereotypes in a number of the films, as well as by a horrific short showing the electrocution of an elephant. The educational possibilities represented in this set are vast
FEED REGIÓN: 1 - - IDIOMA: INGLÉS - - SUBTÍTULOS: INGLÉS- - P.V.P: 15,95 € So you think you’ve already seen the most grotesque fodder Danger After Dark has ever had to offer? Think again. The Australian crime thriller Feed is the apex (or nadir?) of cinematic gross-outs – the ultimate “we dare you” viewing experience, and a veritable rollercoaster ride of potential audience trauma. A naked man pleasures himself in front of a 600-pound woman as she begs for the cheeseburgers he taunts her with…two gay men derive sexual pleasure from consuming each other’s body parts…and this is all in the first five minutes. Still with us? Aussie cop Phillip (Jack Thompson) specializes in investigating international sex crime rings, and he locates a website devoted to the cult of “feeders” and “gainers”: enormously obese women being fed massive food quantities and kept as willingly immobile shut-ins by men obsessed with their girth. But Phillip suspects that this is more dangerous than mere chubby-chaser masturbation material, and his investigation takes him to the site’s origins in suburban Ohio. Webmaster Michael (Alex O’Loughlin) doesn’t fear Phillip, but rather engages him in a sinister cat-and-mouse game that Phillip – without jurisdiction on foreign soil – is in danger of losing. Needless to say, things become even more disturbing (if you think the 600-pound woman’s food intake is bad…just wait until you see what the food consists of). You might want to skip the concession booth in the lobby before this one. “Though it’s disgusting…I could not tear my eyes away from Feed, one of the sickest films I have ever seen.”
THE HUBLEY COLLECTION 1 REGIÓN: 1 - - IDIOMA: INGLÉS - - SUBTÍTULOS: SIN SUBTÍTULOS- - P.V.P: 24,95 € The
first volume of a three-disc survey of the films of the innovative Hubley
Studio offers two of their best known shorts: the Academy Award-winning
"Moonbird" (1959) and the Oscar-nominated "Windy Day"
(1967). In these shorts, independent animators John and Faith Hubley
explored new ways of presenting a child's world through film. They recorded
their children's voices as they spun out fantasies to create a giggling,
rambling soundtrack. In "Moonbird," two brothers prowl their
backyard by night, seeking to capture the shy moonbird. Two sisters
spend an summer afternoon at the seashore, playing games and speculating
about what the future may hold for them in "Windy Day."The
upbeat "People, People, People" (1975) examines the history
of human habitation in North America, from 17,760 B.C. to A.D. 1976.
Benny Carter's genially propulsive score helps the filmmakers present
even unpleasant aspects of history with imagination and good humor.
In "Enter Life" (1981), carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen
atoms assemble to form the molecules essential to all life in a series
of chemical reactions that suggest a microcosmic dance. "Amazonia"
(1989) draws on indigenous myths to present a plea to save the rapidly
vanishing Brazilian rain forest. This volume includes Enter Life (1981),
Upside Down (1991), Who Am I (1989), Blake Ball (1988), Time of the
Angels (1987), People, People, People (1975), W.O.W. Women of the World
(1975), Amazonia (1989), Yes We Can (1988), Moonbird (1959), Tall Time
Tales (1992), Windy Day (1967), Cloudland (1993).
DOCUMENTARIES OF LOUIS MALLE REGIÓN: 1 - - IDIOMA: FRANCÉS - - SUBTÍTULOS: INGLÉS- - P.V.P: 79 € Over the course of a nearly forty-year career, Louis Malle forged a reputation as one of the world’s most versatile cinematic storytellers, with such widely acclaimed, and wide-ranging, masterpieces as Elevator to the Gallows, My Dinner with Andre, and Au revoir les enfants. At the same time, however, with less fanfare, Malle was creating a parallel, even more personal body of work as a documentary filmmaker. With the discerning eye of a true artist and the investigatory skills of a great journalist, Malle takes us from his French homeland to India to the United States, in some of the most engaging and fascinating nonfiction films ever made. Six Disc Set Includes: *Vive Le Tour Humain, Trop Humain Place de la Republique. An energetic evocation of the Tour de France, a meditative investigation of the inner workings of a French automotive plant, and an entertaining snapshot of the comings and goings on one street corner in Paris - Louis Malle's three French-set documentaries reveal, in an eclectic array of ways, the director's eternal facination with and respect for, the everyday lives of everyday people. *Phantom India. Malle called his gorgeous and groundbreaking Phantom India the most personal film of his career. And this extraordinary journey to India, originally shown as a miniseries on European television, is infused with his sense of discovery, as well as occasional outrage, intrigue, and joy. *Calcutta. When he was cutting Phantom India, Malle found that the footage shot in Calcutta was so diverse, intense, and unforgettable that it deserved its own film. The result, released theatrically, is at times shocking - a chaotic portrait of a city engulfed in social and political turmoil, edging ever closer to oblivion. *God's Country. In 1979, Louis Malle traveled into the heart of Minnesota to capture the everyday lives of the men and women in a prosperous farming community. Six years later, during Ronald Reagan's second term, he returned to find drastic economic decline. Free of stereotypes about America's "heartland," God's Country, commissioned for American public television, is a stunning work of emotional and political clarity. *...And the Pursuit of Happiness. In 1986, Malle, himself a transplant in the United States, set out to investigate the ever widening range of immigrant experience in America. Interviewing a variety of newcomers (from teachers to astronauts to doctors) in middle-and working-class communities from coast to coast, Malle paints a generous, humane portrait of their individual struggles in an increasingly polyglot nation.
