Punctuating all of this angst and glowering are copious man-on-man sex scenes with a wee bit of woman-on-woman thrown in to round things out. The special effects are cheap, the dialogue obvious yet confusing, the plot lurches around like a drunk with his foot in a bucket, and the acting...well, let's just say the cast is very pretty to look at. The five episodes of Dante's Cove - the Complete Second Season follow a two-episode first season (more of a pilot, really); the story threads, such as they are, will make just as much sense whether you've seen Season One or not. There are several behind-the-scenes extra features on the dvd; most are the usual "I'm so happy to be on this great show!" stuff, but the most interesting one interviews several cast members about being openly gay actors.

GOOD BOYS

The late director Norman Rene and writer Craig Lucas made a pretty fine creative team on the stage and in the movies, and this 1990 drama about the evolving impact of AIDS on gay New Yorkers is their best cinematic achievement. The ensemble story follows the lives of nine or so characters as word of the so-called "gay cancer" eventually becomes a real force, killing several of them as the years go by. The film works well on a number of levels, not least of which is the enviable closeness of the characters, the script's wit, the bittersweet experience of loss, and a celebratory attitude at the end mixing wisdom with defiance.

What initially starts out as a friendly vacation, in which Harry hopes to dispense some sage words of wisdom about the music industry to his wide-eyed and innocent brother, soon plunges into something altogether darker. Max confesses his homosexuality, reveals his relationship with a 40-year-old male teacher, and perhaps most shockingly of all, openly admits his sexual desire for Harry. Things get worse as Harry tracks down the teacher, only to seduce him in a parking lot, sparking a series of betrayals between the brothers that neatly sets up an engrossing conclusion to the film. An engaging examination of an entirely dysfunctional relationship, the film opens up a fascinating discourse on topics such as incest, trust, homosexuality, and paedophilia. The gutsy performances from Bryce Johnson and Cole Williams deserve great applause, especially considering the formidable subject matter with which they were working. A consuming and deeply eloquent movie, 'Harry And Max' is an audacious, fearless piece of filmmaking.

LATTER DAYS

Turns out the closeted Aaron feels the same way about him, but when his roommates find out, he's shipped back to Pocatello where he faces excommunication. Written and directed by C. Jay Cox (Sweet Home Alabama), a former Mormon missionary, Latter Days features Mary Kay Place as Aaron's disapproving mother and Jacqueline Bisset as the acerbic, yet supportive Lila.
