This movie was never intended for foreign audiences. It is simply way too Russian (or too Soviet, actually) to be funny for anyone not familiar with the realities of local life. Most of the real comedy comes from Mironov and Papanov, who play hilarious villains on the track to recover stolen jewels, mistakenly put into Nikulin's arm cast. Russian-speaking audiences will enjoy Papanov's one-of-a-kind "Ukrainian" accent, but the jokes are too ethnic for anyone else to understand. Nikulin (a circus clown turned great comic actor) isn't particularly believable in an unfamiliar role of a good guy (his characters usually also were drunken and hilarious crooks), but turns in an adequate performance. Mironov is at his usual fast-talking, silly self, and Papanov is a riot. Mordyukova steals several scenes in a small role of a house superintendant, a towering woman with a thunderous voice. Overall, a terrific Soviet comedy, the kind they simply don't make anymore.

'Boy Meets Girl ' was Leos Carax's first movie, and is remarkably mature for a first film!! Leos went on to tell a similar story in his next films. One of the great things about this film is that it reminds me of the glory days of the French New Wave, because it's fresh and has a new way of telling us something we may have heard before.The best thing is that the film has several great visual sequences that prove Carax has the ability to express things visually that alot of directors could only accomplish by using words. It's hard to track this one down, but if you get a chance make sure you see it. Then see the rest of Leos Carax's movies, one of the most visionary directors at work in the contemporary film scene.

Mauvais Sang: This is the best film in Love trilogy of Leos Carax. Leos Carax said he is always interested in Greek mythology. He successfully showed that Greek mythology in this film through a main character, Denis Lavant. He has the Oedipus complex about his father, but his father are killed by someone. And, father's friend looks for Alex to get a help for a crime. Also, he is falling in love with a mystery woman. However, she loves father's friend. Thus, he has the Oedipus complex about father's friend again even though his father died. And, he commits a crime with father's friend. This film shows fantastic images and perfect performance by Juliette Binoche, Denis Lavant and Michel Piccoli. Amants du Pont-Neuf: The final film of the Leos Carax trilogy, following Boy Meets Girl and Mauvais Sang. Here is what the art of film making is all about. The story of the doomed lovers who make their home on the Pont Neuf bridge, and who manage to find some sort of escape from their dark realities in each others company, is unforgettable. Denis Lavant, who appears in all three of the Carax trilogy, is great in his portrayal of Alex, the homeless street performer who falls hopelessly in love with a woman, who appears out of nowhere, to search for a place to sleep, and to hide from her own cruel reality. A painter, losing her vision, but still sketching all that she sees at a frenzied pace, as she knows that she soon will be no longer able to see. The film is so over-the-top romantic, as only French films can be. I had to write something here as a reaction to the bad reviews some gave this wonderful film. It actually saddens me that some people just can't see the magic here, and choose instead to take the film apart by challenging "the logic" of certain scenes and parts of the storyline. Searching for logic and plot holes in a film like this is so utterly ridiculous. Those people should stick to the Hollywood productions, and not even be allowed the privilege of seeing films like this one! Personally I don't go for romantic films, as they usually seem so contrived and phony. But "Amants du Pont-neuf" is such a strong film, and so utterly unique. This is an absolute classic of French cinema, and anyone who has a true appreciation and love for film should not miss this one.
